@CA_Dem 2011 Review: a look back, and a sneak peak at 2012

2011 was no “off year” for California Democrats. We may have won big in 2010 but our efforts certainly did not stop there. With 2011 came new opportunities, plans and goals. The California Democratic Party launched engaging programs throughout the state that will increase turnout in key areas, advance Democratic values, and empower local activists to take charge in 2012.

In order to boost statewide Democratic turnout we launched Operation Game Changer. The program’s goal was to improve Democratic turnout in our most populous County, Los Angeles by converting more of those Democrats to become permanent vote-by-mail (VBM) voters.

L.A. is the most populous Democratic county with more than 2.3 million Democratic votes, yet it registers the lowest percentage of Democrats who vote-by-mail on a permanent basis. Operation Game Changer set out to change that by collaborating with activists from the Los Angeles area as well as Democrats across the state who participated in our online phone banking Day of Action.

Click here to read the Los Angeles Times story on Operation Game Changer.

The last round of census data made it apparent that there are many underrepresented potential Democratic voters in areas traditionally considered “red counties.” Over the spring and into the summer, the CDP’s data and field teams used both census data and demographic information stored in our voter file to design a first of its kind voter registration program in collaboration with local Democrats in San Bernardino, Riverside and Fresno counties. The It Gets Bluer voter registration program launched this summer and local activists at the County and club level have been registering new voters under the program’s banner and continue to report renewed interest from volunteers as well as many new Democrats being brought into the fold!

Christopher Guerrero, Field Director of the California Democratic Party spent his summer and fall working with local activists on the It Gets Bluer program, “this has been a truly collaborative effort with local County Committees and local Democratic clubs and we expect that growth and excitement to boost Democratic voter registration efforts in these regions during the 2012 election year,” he said.

Be sure to check back here as we’ll continue to report on voter registration efforts among participating counties and local Democratic clubs in Fresno, San Bernardino and Riverside counties.

And last but certainly not least the state party’s County Liaison Martha Gamez spent the better part of her year working with Democratic activists across the state setting up trainings and planning with local County Committees. Click here for a map showing all of the areas touched by Martha’s Building on Success Tour.

As part of the Building on Success Tour, and in order to help our committed activists prepare for 2012, Martha worked with Democracy for America to bring their famed Campaign Academy to California. Together with DFA, we hosted four very successful trainings across the state. The training participants received an intensive download on subjects such as voter targeting, communications, campaign finance, fundraising, and voter file training/management.

What we’ve done with your help in 2011 will enhance all Democratic efforts in 2012 and ensure that California Democrats have the tools they need to help re-elect President Obama, defend our U.S. Senate seat and help make Nancy Pelosi Speaker of the House once again. Each of these programs will allow us to have an aggressive field and communications program in place next year to defeat the paycheck deception ballot initiative and keep Republicans on the run in California by holding them accountable.

Here’s to 2012 and we hope to see you in San Diego for an exciting 2012 California Democrats State Convention.

Yannick Phillips: Sonoma Advocate and DEM 2012 Contest Winner

Yannick Phillips is a Sonoma resident, a long time Democrat, a sustainable food and agriculture advocate, a DEM 2012 member, and just to add one more thing to her list, she is the first ever DEM 2012 contest winner. She signed up the most new DEM 2012 members and now she’s the proud winner of two hours of Controller John Chiang’s time to a charitable cause of her choice.

When Yannick first heard about the DEM 2012 contest she jumped at the chance to raise money by getting Democrats to sign up for the Donate Every Month (DEM) program. Of course Yannick didn’t become a DEM 2012 member just to win a contest, she has been a member for quite some time. As Yannick explains, “I became a DEM 2012 member because I really wanted to support the work that our Party has been doing across the State to advance Democratic values, and DEM 2012 was another way for me to support that effort.”

So when a contest came along encouraging new DEM 2012 sign ups, Yannick couldn’t think of a good reason not to participate – winning two hours of Controller Chiang’s time was an added bonus. With the help of Paul Apffel, Montana Mathieu and Evelyn Woo, advocates who are organizing to create a Sustainable Food and Agriculture caucus within the California Democratic Party, Yannick signed up the most new DEM 2012 members.

Yannick signed up quite a few people who knew nothing about DEM 2012 until she had a chance to talk to them about the program. As she describes, “I signed up many people who did not realize that they could give to the party in a small way, and that it actually would make a significant impact in the long run. And there were still others I signed up who hadn’t participated in the Party before, this was just a great and easy way to bring them into the fold and learn about our Party at a deeper level.”

Yannick’s dedication to DEM 2012 is admirable to say the least. As Yannick puts it, “DEM 2012 is a great program because you can give back to the Party in a small way, and that’s really empowering. Not only do you get to become involved in your Party, but you are also helping the Party run successful programs across the state. That’s why I signed up and took care to sign up others.”

Yannick has chosen to share Controller John Chiang’s time with her fellow Sonoma Democrats. They aren’t sure how they will spend their time with him but there are some events brewing that they are considering asking him to attend.

There is still time to sign up and become a DEM 2012 member. Future contests and prizes will be announced. Don’t miss your chance to help out and win some great prizes along the way. Click here to sign up.

The San Joaquin Valley Democratic Club: A Small Club With Great Blue Hopes

The San Joaquin Valley Democratic Club is a local club in Fresno County that has been busy contributing their time and effort to the It Gets Bluer program, and registering new Democratic voters in the process. James Williams, the club President has been a strong advocate for registering new voters in the area, and the It Gets Bluer program has provided the club, and other area Democrats, with the infrastructure to strengthen their efforts.

“Voter registration has been a passion of ours for a long time and our club realized that we did not have as widespread a volunteer network of people interested in voter registration as we would like. So with that realization in tow our club decided to merge our efforts with It Gets Bluer because we are registering new Democrats and with that, building a network of potential activists and volunteers that did not exist before,” explained James.

The It Gets Bluer program, a joint effort of the California Democratic Party and local Democrats in Fresno County has been welcomed as a shot in the arm by the San Joaquin Valley Club, and many including James are happy to see such efforts come to fruition in red areas such as Fresno County. As James explains, “we are extremely pleased that the program has incorporated local activists and that the California Democratic Party is making a concerted effort to help bring these efforts to red counties where there is strong potential for Democratic growth. We are now able to make Fresno County bluer and to build a network of Democratic activists.”

The San Joaquin Valley Democratic Club has big plans for the future. As James Describes, “we plan to continue with voter registration through the November 2012 election. We would like to do more voter education, and build our club through the new Democrats we register. We are getting better and better each time we register new voters, and we are slowly but surely building a network of new Democrats here.”

2012 will be an exciting year for California Democrats and for the San Joaquin Valley Democratic Club, “it will be all about making it bluer and as a result winning key offices at the local level, reelecting the President, and reelecting Senator Dianne Feinstein,” said James.

We couldn’t be more excited for 2012 especially when we’ve got folks like the San Joaquin Valley Democratic Club working hard and committing themselves to big change in their area.

The Democratic Club of Southwest Riverside County Looking To A Bluer Future

The It Gets Bluer effort in Riverside County is becoming more robust and successful thanks to local Democratic Clubs sponsoring It Gets Bluer voter registration events.

One such local club is the Democratic Club of Southwest Riverside County. The club has been active in the community for about 20 years and they are taking a lively role in participating in the It Gets Bluer campaign.

Club member and Middle School Language Arts Teacher, Suji Fox shared why the Democratic Club of Southwest Riverside County is participating in the It Gets Bluer Campaign. “We are participating in the It Gets Bluer campaign because the more we grow our base here, the larger statement it creates in our county that we Democrats are united and strong, and ready to change the current status quo,” said Suji.

Suji and fellow club members welcome the statewide attention the It Gets Bluer effort is generating for Inland Empire Democrats. “I think it’s great that the Party has put their attention in Riverside County; it is certainly boosting our volunteers’ enthusiasm for registering voters and ultimately getting the vote out,” Suji expressed. “And it’s been fun and energizing to work with Jacqueline Casillas and her interns!”

Voter Registration is an effort that will be ongoing for the club through 2012. As Suji explains, “We are sponsoring tabling events through early December, and starting in January we will be hosting multiple voter registration events weekly and monthly all the way through November 2012.”

As Suji sees it, there is a reason for the impassioned activism present in her club, led by president Gail Ferrell. “We all know there is a huge chasm between Republicans and Democrats, and there simply is no choice but Democrat. So as Democrats we have got to leave the comfort of our own homes, meet new people and convey the message that the Democratic Party is the Party of the people.”

We feel the same way!
